Student Research Appointments

Personal Research Instruction Request

For more in-depth guidance on using library resources for research and assignments, Thomas University students may submit a Personal Research Instruction Request to schedule a meeting with a librarian in-person or online.  Appointments are generally 30-50 minutes long in an active-learning format where librarians and users are engaged in learning and working together. Participants must have access to a computer to be able to conduct searches and find information from Thomas University's website.  Our objective is to empower users with the skills and confidence to engage in information and knowledge-gathering activities at the higher education level.

Librarians can provide instruction and guidance with the following:

  • Refining a research topic and developing key words for searches
  • Searching GALILEO and other databases and resources
  • Using various citation styles including APA and MLA
  • Evaluating and finding appropriate sources
  • Navigating the library website and resources

Please note: Librarians cannot write research papers, correct or edit homework or assignments, or create reference lists.  While librarians can provide guidance with search strategies, students will be required to do their own research and will be responsible for selecting the most appropriate articles from a list of results in any database. It will not be the librarian's responsibility to decide what articles or resources should be included in a paper or assignment.

For math or writing tutoring, please schedule a tutoring appointment with the Learning Commons

Reminders:

1. When filling out the Personal Research Instruction Form, please provide as much information as possible for the librarian to prepare ahead of your meeting. Only current Thomas University members can schedule an appointment and a TU email is required.

2. Be sure to check your email to ensure you have received your appointment confirmation.

3. If you can't attend your appointment, please cancel your appointment before your meeting by going to your confirmation email and following the instructions. This lets the librarian know that you will not be attending and gives other students the opportunity to book an appointment.

4. For remote appointments via Zoom, individuals must participate in the meeting and discussion and not be engaged in any other activity. Meeting attendants must be in a location on a PC or laptop with internet access and audio and video capabilities.
